With the twenty-first century comes a new breed of struggling independent artist: the indie game designer. Refusing to toil for major developers, these innovators independently conceive, design, and program their distinctly personal games in the hope that they, too, may find success.

After two years of painstaking work, designer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tommy Refenes await the release of their first major game for Xbox, Super Meat Boy—the adventures of a skinless boy in search of his girlfriend, who is made of bandages. At PAX, a major video-game expo, developer Phil Fish unveils his highly anticipated, four-years-in-the-making FEZ. Jonathan Blow considers beginning a new game after creating Braid, one of the highest-rated games of all time.

First-time filmmaking duo Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky capture the emotional journey of these meticulously obsessive artists who devote their lives to their interactive art. Four developers, three games, and one ultimate goal— to express oneself through a video game.

Scott Miller, a newspaper reporter, is a writing a book of interviews with private detectives. His research leads him to one Dave Goodman, a tough character who tips Scott off to his best lead so far: a legend among detectives named John D. The problem is, John D wants nothing to do with Scott or his book. But Scott’s curiosity gets the best of him when he decides to investigate John with the help of his jazz critic friend Eddie Adams. Soon, he’s discovered a steamy affair between John and a beautiful woman named Christine. There’s something about her that he can’t stay away from and he’s slowly drawn away from his work into a plot of sex and crime.

(6/21 at 8pm) Lewis, a down-and-out record store clerk finds his boss dead one morning. The police call it suicide but something tells him it’s foul play. He sets out on a journey with his bitchy co-worker April to find the murderer amongst the eccentric customers who frequent the store. A murder-mystery-comedy filmed in Phoenix, AZ at Tracks N Wax and many other local businesses.
