GREEN FUSE FILMS’ award–winning documentary Between the Folds chronicles the stories of ten fine artists and intrepid theoretical scientists who have abandoned careers and scoffed at hard–earned graduate degrees—all to forge unconventional lives as modern–day paperfolders.

As they converge on the unlikely medium of origami, these artists and scientists reinterpret the world in paper, and bring forth a bold mix of sensibilities towards art, expressiveness, creativity and meaning. And, together these offbeat and provocative minds demonstrate the innumerable ways that art and science come to bear as we struggle to understand and honor the world around us—as artists, scientists, creators, collaborators, preservers, and simply curious beings.

“Luminously photographed”, with a “haunting” original score featuring the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the film paints an arresting portrait of the mysterious creative threads that bind us all–fusing science and sculpture, form and function, ancient and new.

“A gorgeous cinematic experience. I was so captivated by the documentary that halfway
through I felt intense admiration for humanity, the same tingling I feel
when listening to music so exquisite it’s almost painful.”

— Karen A. Frenkel, Talking Science

“Probably the first documentary I’ve ever watched that I hoped would never end.”

— George Heymont, The Huffington Post

3 1/2 stars: “…Exquisite sights and surprising thoughts…
Mere paper draws visionaries and virtuosos.”

— Bill Stamets, Chicago Sun-Times

“This film is much more than a loving look at the fascinating, brilliant characters who
devote their lives to folding paper. It reveals origami itself as richer and more intricate
than you could imagine… and by the end, you find yourself convinced that the mystery of
folding could be one of the universe’s deep secrets.”

— Chris Anderson, Curator, TED Conference

Arizona Theatre Company and FilmBar proudly present a truly unique theatrical experience in downtown Phoenix. ATC presents the riotous Broadway smash The 39 Steps on stage at the Herberger Theater Center. This wild ride mixes a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel and a dash of Monty Python. The madness begins when mild-mannered Richard Hannay starts his evening at the theatre and ends the night with a dead body in his lap. Caught in a maze of murder, espionage and flirtatious entanglements, our hero careens from the British music hall to the moors of Scotland and back to the London Palladium in search of a plausible alibi and the true identity of the killer. Four bravura actors play over 150 characters to bring Hitchcock’s movie to life.

Can’t believe it? Seeing is believing! FilmBar presents the original The 39 Steps for 3 nights only. Enjoy the Hitchcock classic in our soundproofed micro-cinema on our 16’ x 9’screen in HD with 9 speaker surround sound. Watch Richard Hannay on the run handcuffed to a girl while trying to break up a spy ring. Watch and compare the play to the movie or the movie to the play. Can’t make up your mind? Feel free to see both The 39 Steps again.

ATC’s The 39 Steps plays February 9 to February 26 at the Herberger Theater Center 222 E Monroe St Downtown Phoenix.
In 1994, scientist Victor DeNoble became the first whistleblower to reveal the tobacco industry’s efforts to manufacture “a maximally addictive” product. Tasked in the 1980s by a major tobacco company to invent a safer form of nicotine — one that would decrease the danger of heart failure while remaining just as addictive (so smokers could live, and smoke, longer) — DeNoble succeeded. But, in doing so, he inadvertently created indisputable evidence that nicotine was addictive, something the tobacco companies had long denied. His position was terminated, his lab was closed, and both his research and the “safer cigarette” were buried in the vaults and kept from the public…until he broke his confidentiality agreement and became the ultimate whistleblower.

Simmering marital tensions and unexpected complications weigh heavily on the conscience of a seasoned contract killer in this dark thriller from Down Terrace director Ben Wheatley. An ex-soldier in desperate need of work, Jay (Neil Maskell) is hosting a dinner party with his wife, Shel (MyAnna Buring), when the conversation with guests Gal (Michael Smiley) and Fiona (Emma Fryer) turns suddenly combative. In the aftermath of the incident, Gal proposes to Jay that they both earn a hearty payday by accepting a few well-timed contract jobs. Meanwhile, as the pair go to work getting a lock on their targets, Jay finds himself increasingly distracted by domestic issues and his growing desire to be a good father. Jay’s paternal instincts drive him to violent extremes, however, when he makes a shocking discovery about one of the men on his list. Later, after finding a new tool to get the job done, the details of Jay’s latest assignment begin to take on deeply ominous undertones.

NORWEGIAN WOOD is a moving story of loss and sexuality set in Tokyo in the late 1960s against a time of global instability. Watanabe (Japanese rising star Kenichi Matsuyama, Death Note, Detroit Metal City) looks back on his days as a freshman university student living in Tokyo. Through his reminiscences, we see him develop relationships with two very different women, the beautiful yet emotionally troubled Naoko (Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi, Babel), and the outgoing, lively Midori (Japanese-Korean model-actress Kiko Mizuhara.) The film’s gorgeous cinematography is by Mark Lee Ping Bin (IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, DEVILS ON THE DOORSTEP). Originally published in 1987, Murakami’s novel has since been translated into 33 languages and published in 36 countries.
