Our opening show of the season, The Royale, is based on the life of Jack Johnson, the first African American heavy weight prize fighter. He fights the same fight for fame in the boxing ring and respect on the street as the Mexican-American teenager in the movie The Ring. The play is set in 1910 and the movie in the 1950's but both powerfully give voice to the struggles of the outsider in American society.
Hosted by Dr. Mathew Sandoval, Faculty Fellow at ASU’s Barrett the Honors College & Affiliate Faculty at the Center for the Study of Race & Democracy, who will introduce the film with a quick cultural and political primer, followed by a post-screening discussion on the patio under the stars.
Teenager Tommy Cantanios (Lalo Rios) is tired of being treated like a second-class citizen because he is Mexican-American. When one too many bigots takes a shot at him, Cantanios decides to fight back, finding in the process that he has a gift for boxing. Utilizing his newfound skill, Cantanios becomes a professional boxer with the help of his manager, Pete Ganusa (Gerald Mohr), and trainer, Freddy Jack (Robert Osterloh). However, Cantanios still struggles to find genuine respect as a person.
